'The Invisible Baby' - #2 in 'Invisible' series
The Invisible Baby
Vince was the produce manager in his Uncle Ed’s grocery store by day. In the evenings and on the weekends he was a Private Investigator. He decided to become a PI because one day, while meditating on his bedroom floor, he became invisible. It was an idea he had had for many years. He thought to himself, that if he meditated on speeding up his molecular vibration, he might be able to achieve invisibility. Much to his surprise, it worked. He learned how to control it and he thought the perfect job for someone who could induce invisibility in themselves, would be to either become a spy or work in a job that required surveillance. He could come and go undetected. His mentor and boss was Bill Bixley. Bill was also a friend and father figure.
Vince married his college girlfriend, Tara. She was the only one who knew his secret. No one else in the world knew that he could become invisible. Vince and Tara were married and conceived a child. They had talked about names to give the baby. Vince’s entire name was Nathan Vincent Able. Vince learned at an early age that his name could say, “Invincible” – N. Vince Able. When he told Tara about his discovery she thought about her own name and said, “My married name is now Tara Able. Does that make me “terrible” – Tarable! They joked about finding a good name for their baby girl and came up with Ami – Amy with an ‘i’. Ami Able – Amiable. That was a good name, the word meaning friendly. It was a very good name. They were both pleased with the choice.
Ami Able was born healthy and mild mannered. She was such a sweet baby that she didn’t complain when her feeding was delayed or her diaper needed changing. One of the nurses said, “It’s almost as if she isn’t there.” What they didn’t realize yet was that Ami Able could become invisible like her father. Neither Tara nor Vince knew it yet. Their doctor kept baby Ami in the nursery connected to a monitor just as a precaution. Ami never seemed to cry and they were concerned about her lung function. Everything checked out normal though. One day Vince and Tara walked down to the nursery to visit Ami. While they were looking at her in her hospital basinet, admiring her cute little nose and rosebud mouth, she vanished in front of their eyes. At first they couldn’t believe it. Then reality dawned on them and they turned toward one another with their mouths wide open.
“How am I going to take care of an invisible baby? Tara whispered in dismay. It was too early to start to worry. But since Ami was a baby they didn’t know how she would be able to control it. Tara asked, “Do you think it was the time you took me with you to become invisible when I was pregnant and didn’t know it?
Vince said, “I guess it’s a possibility but I was wondering if somehow my genetic makeup had somehow been altered. When you became invisible maybe your DNA was altered as well. We could have both passed it down to her in our DNA.”
There was really no one to ask since as far as they knew Vince was the first person in the world to become invisible at will. Now maybe he was one of two people with this ability, his daughter being the second person. Tara could only become invisible if Vince was touching her when he became invisible.
Tara started to get concerned and said, “What if she gets hungry? She won’t be able to eat if she is still invisible.”
